The Trolley Problem Version of Autonomous Vehicles

چکیده
The Trolley problem is very well-known ethics dilemma about actively killing one or sometimes even more persons in order to save more persons. The problem can occur in autonomous vehicles when the vehicle realizes that there is no way to prevent a collision, the computer of the vehicle should analyze which collision is considered to be the least harmful collision. In this paper we suggest a method to evaluate the likely harmfulness of each sort of collision using Spatial Data Structures and Bounding Volumes and accordingly to decide which course of actions would be the less harmful and therefore should be chosen by the autonomous vehicle.

Scheduling of Multiple Autonomous Guided Vehicles for an Assembly Line Using Minimum Cost Network Flow
This paper proposed a parallel automated assembly line system to produce multiple products having multiple autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs). Several assembly lines are configured to produce multiple products in which the technologies of machines are shared among the assembly lines when required. The transportation between the stations in an assembly line (intra assembly line) and among station...
متن کاملA Safety-Case Approach to Ethical Considerations for Autonomous Vehicles
Ethical considerations for autonomous vehicles (AVs) go beyond the “trolley problem” to include such aspects as risk / benefit trade-offs, informed consent, risk responsibility and risk mitigation within a system of systems. In this paper we present a methodology for arguing that the behaviour of a given AV meets desired ethical characteristics. We identify some of the ethical imperatives surro...
متن کاملAdaptive Robust Control for Trajectory Tracking of Autonomous underwater Vehicles on Horizontal Plane
This manuscript addresses trajectory tracking problem of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) on the horizontal plane. Adaptive sliding mode control is employed in order to achieve a robust behavior against some uncertainty and ocean current disturbances, assuming that disturbance and its derivative are bounded by unknown boundary levels. The proposed approach is based on a dual layer adaptive...
متن کاملEthics and the safety of autonomous systems
The ethical landscape surrounding the introduction of autonomous vehicles is complex, and there are real concerns over whether the operational safety of these systems can be adequately demonstrated. In this paper we focus on the ethical factors relevant to the design and safety justification of autonomous systems, considering issues such as risk transfer, ALARP considerations, capability vs ris...

© 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Published 2016 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The Trolley Problem has baffled ethicists for decades (Foot 1978; Thomson 1985; Fischer and Ravizza 1992) and has, more recently, become a focal point for research in moral psychology (Petrinovich, O’Neill, and Jorgensen 1993; Greene et al. 2001; Edmonds 2013; Greene 2015). As the Trolley Problem’s interdisciplinary histor...
